X (Twitter) account suspended: what to do

Locked, read-only or suspended: what each status on X means, how to appeal a suspension, what to include, and why creating a new account can make things worse.

On X, a suspended account disappears from timelines and its profile shows a suspension notice. For journalists, public figures and brands, that is a reputational problem as much as a technical one.

Locked, read-only or suspended

  • Locked: X asks you to complete a task, for example confirm a phone number, change the password or delete a post. Once done, the account works again.
  • Read-only: you can browse but not post, follow or like for a period of time.
  • Suspended: the account is offline. You need to file an appeal if you believe the decision was wrong.

Common reasons

Spam and platform manipulation, ban evasion, impersonation, hacked accounts posting harmful links, abusive behaviour and repeated copyright complaints are the most common triggers.

How to appeal

  1. Log in and follow the on-screen steps, or use the appeal form in X’s Help Center.
  2. Choose the reason that matches your case.
  3. Explain briefly and factually why the account should be restored. If it was hacked, say so and describe what you have done to secure it.
  4. Use the email address linked to the account so X can match the request.

What helps

  • a calm, specific explanation
  • proof of identity for personal accounts, or company documents for brands
  • evidence of a takeover if the suspension followed a hack
  • removal of anything that genuinely broke the rules

How we help

We work out why the account was suspended, secure it if it was compromised, prepare the appeal and follow it up, and protect the account against the patterns that trigger suspensions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between locked and suspended?

A locked account usually needs you to complete a step, such as verifying a phone number or deleting a post. A suspended account has been taken offline for a rule violation and needs an appeal.

Should I open another account while I appeal?

No. Creating a new account to get around a suspension breaks X's rules and can lead to permanent suspension of every account involved.

Do verified or paid accounts get faster reviews?

Paid subscriptions may include priority support, but they do not change the rules that apply to the account.
