Noindex

Noindex is a tag added to a web page that tells search engines not to show it in results.

Why it matters

A publisher may refuse to delete an old article but agree to noindex it. The article stays in the archive but no longer appears for your name on Google and Bing.

How it works

The page includes <meta name="robots" content="noindex">; the search engine drops it on its next crawl, and the outdated content tools speed this up.

Frequently asked questions

Is robots.txt the same?

No. robots.txt blocks crawling, but a linked page can stay indexed; noindex removes it from the index.
