How to remove Google reviews: a guide for business owners

Which Google reviews break the rules, how to flag them in your Business Profile, how to appeal, when a legal removal request applies, and how to respond when a review stays.

For many local businesses, Google reviews are read more often than the website. One fake one-star review can pull down the average and cost customers. You cannot delete reviews yourself, but reviews that break Google’s rules are often removed when they are reported the right way.

Which reviews break Google’s policies?

  • Spam and fake engagement: multiple reviews from one person, bought reviews, reviews from people who never visited.
  • Off-topic content: political rants or personal disputes unrelated to the business.
  • Conflicts of interest: reviews by competitors, former employees or the owner.
  • Harassment, hate speech and threats.
  • Personal information: phone numbers, home addresses, health details.
  • Sexually explicit or violent content.

If you can match a review to one of these categories, your chances are good.

Step 1: Report the review

In your Google Business Profile, open Reviews, choose the review, and use Report review. Pick the reason that fits; a wrong reason is the most common cause of rejection.

Step 2: Track and appeal

Google’s review management tool shows the status of reported reviews and lets you appeal a rejected report once. Keep the appeal short and factual: “This person was never a customer; we have no booking or order under this name.”

If a review is defamatory or otherwise unlawful, Google’s legal removal form applies. These requests rest on a legal basis and are best prepared with a lawyer. Attach a court order if you have one.

If the review stays

  • Reply: brief, polite and solution-focused. Never argue or share personal data.
  • Grow genuine reviews: asking happy customers is allowed; buying reviews or trading discounts for them is not, and it can hurt your profile.
  • Document review attacks: a burst of reviews in a short time signals an attack. Report them together with dates and screenshots.
